Carnival Cruise Lines has rolled out a new sales event offering free best available upgrades on a wide variety of “Fun Ship” departures throughout 2009.

The new “Fun4All” promotion is available in conjunction with virtually all three- to 12-day cruises departing through Dec. 18, 2009, including voyages to the Caribbean, Bahamas, Mexico, Alaska, Hawaii, Canada, New England and Europe. To be eligible for this special offer, bookings must be made between Jan. 5-23, 2009.

“With consumers beginning to make their summer and fall vacation plans, there’s no better time to book a ‘Fun Ship’ vacation and this free best available upgrade promotion makes the value of a Carnival cruise even greater,” said Lynn Torrent, Carnival’s senior vice president of sales and guest services.

The new “Fun4All” sales event is capacity controlled and applies to new individual bookings for categories 4A and higher. Upgrades are available within specific stateroom accommodation types (i.e., interior to interior, ocean view to ocean view, balcony to balcony, etc.). Guests must request fare code PFF when making the reservation.

Carnival is the largest and most popular cruise line in the world, with 22 “Fun Ships” operating voyages ranging from three to 18 days in length to The Bahamas, Caribbean, Mexican Riviera, Alaska, Hawaii, Panama Canal, Canada, New England, Europe, Bermuda and South America. The line currently has two new ships scheduled for delivery between now and 2011. The first of those, the 130,000-ton Carnival Dream, is set to debut Sept. 21, 2009.

NCL Star Mexico Cruise Blog Day 3: Cabo San Lucas - December 15, 2008
Posted by: CruiseGuy on Thursday, December 25, 2008 - 03:41 AM
ncl-star-mexico
Today the ship arrived at our first port of call, Cabo San Lucas, at around 11 AM. To get to shore you had to take a tender boat, and we decided to take our time and go to the Market Cafe and have lunch first. We saw some beautiful views of the Cabo coastline on the way to the cafe. After lunch we got our tender boat ticket and after some waiting got on and went to shore. Upon arriving we were immediately surrounded by local tour operators. We decided to go for the 45 minute coastal tour for $10 + $1 "dock" fee per person. It was really worth it. Our glass-bottom boat wasn't exactly luxurious by any stretch, but we got to see the beautiful clear waters off of the Cabo coast, pelicans, seals, and interesting rock formations. Unfortunately we didn't ge a chance to step on one of the beaches we saw, but the rocky boat ride certainly satisfied our appetite for adventure. After the tour we decided to walk around and check out downtown Cabo. Everything seems overly Americanized and touristy. We did get to take some nice pictures of the locals and buy some souvenirs.

We ate dinner at the Aqua restaurant. The Monkfish was okay, and the Salmon was good like the other day. The Tofu strudle curry was pretty interesting. The tuna tartare appetizer was tasty. After dinner we proceed to the Stardust Theatre for a magic show put on by Murray the Magician. He kind of overdid it with the CDs at the beginning, but once he started talking the show seemed more interesting. The best trick was probably when he had his sexy assistant disappear in a box and then re-appearing.

After the show we went to the "White-Hot" Dance Party, which coincidentally was also a birthday celebration for our cruise director Paul. You were supposed to wear as many white clothes as possible. Unfortunately DJ Freddy pretty much played the exact same music from last night, and we left in about an hour due to boredom from not having enough interesting songs to dance to.

NCL Star Mexico Cruise Blog Day 2: Sea Day and Formal Night - December 14, 2008
Posted by: CruiseGuy on Wednesday, December 24, 2008 - 07:23 PM
ncl-star-mexico
We were puzzled why the official time was shifted one hour starting today. It could be something having to do with daylight saving. Today the ship was much less shaky then last night, which was the most turbulent we've experience ever on a cruise. Some of us even had to resort to getting some sea-sickness pills (free of charge) from the front desk.

We had lunch at the Versailles. It has nice French decor, and the food was good as well. We had dishes such as the Sweet and Sour Grouper and Meatlover's Meatloaf. The Warm Pudding dessert was delicious- easily the best sweet dish we have tasted on the cruise thus far.

We were going to attend the Art auction but was too late, so we headed over the free throw shooting contest. I was rusty and didn't come close to winning. The winner made 7 out of 10 free throws and got a mug with some pens as the prize.

It was formal night so we all got dressed up. At around 7 PM we went and took pictures with the Captain of the ship, Gunnar Hammerin. For dinner we ate the Verseille. It was lobster night so we had good anticipation built up. Unfortunately the lobster tails were small and halved and overcooked. One of us had the Beef Wellington and it turned out to be way too salty. The salmon was good, however. The Pumpkin and Ginger Bisque and the honey creme brulee were tasty as well.

We proceeded to the Stardust Theatre for the evening's show, named "The Music of the Night" / "The Music of Andrew Lloyd Webber", presented by the Jean Anne Ryan Productions company. The performers had good voices but overall the show was a tad on the boring side. After relaxing for a bit, we proceed to the Spinnaker Lounge for "DJ Freddy's Late Night Party Zone". We danced and had a great time, but wished there were more variety of music played instead of so much R&B/Rap.

Superstar Virgo to Get Stainless Steel Water Slide
Posted by: CruiseGuy on Monday, December 22, 2008 - 02:46 PM
cruise-news
Star Cruises, the third largest cruise operator in the world is proud to present the world’s first stainless steel water slide on a cruise ship on SuperStar Virgo. Costing a whopping US$550,000, the superstructure will be installed on the luxurious liner during her dry dock in January 2009.

Mr. Michael Goh, Senior Vice President of Sales of Star Cruises said, “We are very excited about the new gigantic water slide which is to be installed on the SuperStar Virgo. We believe in giving our cruisers the best cruise experiences; this latest feature is part of our continuous effort to upgrade our products and services to provide our cruisers with more endless fun times and values onboard. As it is the first of its kind on a cruise ship, it will be something that all cruisers can look forward to. The 100-meter slide will be completed by the end of January 2009, and it promises lots of fun splashes on board our largest ship in the Asian fleet.”

The gigantic slide is a product by Wiegan Maelzer, the supplier to water parks world-wide. The 100-meter slide will go up to 10.54 meters above the deck and with an average inclination of 10%, it will offer sliders a maximum speed of 7 meters per second. Together with a spectacular 5m long glass tube at 25m above the ocean surface, sliders will experience the thrill of flying above the ocean. The 25 % inclination towards the end will further accelerate the slider up to a speed of 25km per hour before splashing into the water break.

NCL Star Mexico Cruise Blog Day 1: Embarkation and Leaving Los Angeles - December 13, 2008
Posted by: CruiseGuy on Sunday, December 21, 2008 - 03:48 AM
ncl-star-mexico
We arrived at the Los Angeles Cruise Terminal at around 10:30 AM. We checked in our baggage at the curb and proceeded to the building for check-in. We were assigned group 4, and were a bit annoyed that there weren't enough chairs for us to sit in the waiting area. This only lasted about 5 minutes as group 3 was called away to register. After about 15 minutes our group was called to go register/check-in. Afterwards we sat back down and waited to be boarded. An announcement was made that boarding forthe Norwegian Star was going to be at noon. After some more waiting we finally were able to board the ship.

We were each given our choice of champagne or orange-ade as we entered the ship. We then proceeded to the Market Cafe at deck 12 to have lunch. There was a large selection of salad, pizza, pastas, as well as a slicing station as well. At 1:30 we went to our ocean-view cabins on Deck 5. They were small as expected but neat and clean. The squarish-porthole was larger than I had envisioned, and provided a nice view of the dock. The shower and the bathroom each had their own sliding door which is nice. The TV stand, however, cannot be rotated so that you can view it from the toilet (which was the case with our cabin on the Norwegian Sun).

We then proceeded to the Internet cafe to buy our Internet usage minutes. The embarkation speicals were 20 free minutes if you buy 250 minutes for $100 (+ $3.95 connection charge) or 15 free minutes if you bought 100 minutes for $55. We noticed on our NCL Latitudes letter that we can get 30 free minutes if you bought 250, so go for that deal instead if you've been on a NCL cruise before. If you don't mention that deal the Internet manager may well not give you that extra 10 minutes. There was a raffle for prizes at the Barong Spa so we headed over there. Unfortunately we didn't win anything!

For dinner we headed to the Aqua restaurant. The leg of lamb was good, as was the Mahi Mahi. The creme brule was tasty as well and not too sweet. Afterward we went to the Stardust theatre to watch the opening night show, m.c.'ed by Paul, our cruise director. He has a heavy accent and had a hard time pumping up the crowd. The show wasn't very impressive overall especially considering we missed the first 10 minutes and only saw the tail-end of the performance of a muscial dance troupe. The rest of the show consisted of Paul making jokes, interacting with the crowd, and several solo musical acts.

Afterwards we were encouraged to go the the party at the Spinnaker lounge so we obliged. There was a raffle to win various prizes such as t-shirts, bingo cards, and even a free shore excursion. We didn't win anything there either! After the 70's dance music started blaring and we danced for about half an hour before calling it an evening.

Posted by: CruiseGuy on Thursday, December 18, 2008 - 02:05 AM
cruise-news
Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) sets sail in the Travel Channel's one-hour special entitled Great Cruises: Norwegian Pearl, hosted by Brook Lee, Miss Universe 1998. The show, filmed in high-definition during a seven-day Alaska cruise aboard Norwegian Pearl, will premiere during the network's Alaska-themed night on Sunday, December 21, 2008 at 10 p.m. EST.

"With the first bowling alley at sea, a world-class spa, numerous specialty restaurants and a host of other amenities, Norwegian Pearl has so much to offer cruisers, especially in Alaska where guests can enjoy the glaciers, waterfalls and wildlife all from the comfort and convenience of the ship," said Kevin Sheehan, NCL's president and CEO. "We are pleased that the Travel Channel has recognized Norwegian Pearl as a great cruise ship and has chosen to feature the ship and its awe-inspiring Alaska itinerary in this special."

The show allows viewers to vacation alongside Lee through Alaska's Inside Passage with breathtaking stops in Juneau, Skagway, Glacier Bay and Ketchikan, Alaska. While on board, she explores the ship's amenities including bowling in Bliss Ultra Lounge; dining in several of the ship's specialty restaurants including dinner at Cagney's Steakhouse and Teppanyaki, a jazz lunch at Le Bistro, and tapas and cocktails at Mambos; dancing the night away in Spinnaker Lounge at NCL's White Hot Party; rock climbing; plunging into one of the steaming whirlpools while sailing through Glacier Bay; taking in a show at the Stardust Theater and relaxing in the spa with a hot stone massage after a day ashore.

While off the ship on NCL's shore excursions, Lee journeys into Juneau to take in the impressive sight of Mendenhall Glacier and sets off on a wildlife quest where she sees orca and humpback whales, seals, salmon and eagles. In Skagway, she indulges in Alaskan king crab at the Skagway Fish Company and sets off shopping in the quaint town. Then, Lee embarks on a Bering Sea crab fishermen's tour in Ketchikan onboard the Aleutian Ballad, one of the fishing boats featured on Discovery Channel's hit show "Deadliest Catch."

Throughout the hour-long show cruise and travel experts provide their expertise including Gene Sloan, USA Today's cruise editor; Philip Levine, cruise industry expert and entrepreneur; Michael Andre Adams, travel writer; Jennifer Doncsecz, president of VIP Vacations, Inc.; and Jon Ashton, celebrity chef, amongst others.

In 2009, Norwegian Pearl sails seven-day Alaska cruises through Glacier Bay round-trip from Seattle; Norwegian Star sails seven-day Alaska cruises through Sawyer Glacier round-trip from Seattle and Norwegian Sun sails seven-day Alaska cruises through Sawyer Glacier round-trip from Vancouver. NCL's seven-day Alaska cruises are priced from $599 per person. Guests can extend their cruise with an unforgettable visit to Alaska's Denali National Park with a pre- or post-cruise land package.

Great Cruises: Norwegian Pearl is scheduled to air again on Travel Channel Saturday, December 27, 2008 at 10 a.m. EST; Saturday, January 10, 2009 at 2 p.m. EST; Friday, January 16, 2009 at 10 a.m. EST; and Thursday, February 12, 2009 at 10 p.m. EST.

Today, NCL has the youngest fleet in the industry with 11 purpose-built Freestyle Cruising ships, providing guests the opportunity to enjoy a relaxed cruise vacation on the newest, most contemporary ships at sea.

NCL is presently building a new third generation Freestyle Cruising project known as F3, for delivery in 2010.

Princess Ships Will Connect to Shore Power at Port of Vancouver in 2009
Posted by: CruiseGuy on Thursday, December 18, 2008 - 02:04 AM
cruise-news
Expanding its commitment to reduce air emissions, Princess Cruises has announced it will turn off its ships' engines and instead use clean hydroelectric power supplied from ashore when calling at the Port of Vancouver during the upcoming 2009 summer cruise season.

The innovative technology is being made possible through a partnership with several Canadian project partners and sister company Holland America Line.

Princess will use hydroelectric power from the city's grid instead of the ships' diesel-powered engines to run all onboard services for its four ships docking at the Canada Place Cruise Ship Terminal during day-long turnaround calls. The new shore power installation is the very first use of this technology in Canada and is the result of a $9 million cooperative partnership among Port Metro Vancouver, Transport Canada, Western Economic Diversification Canada, British Columbia Ministry of Transportation, British Columbia Hydro, Holland America Line and Princess Cruises.

Princess' shore power program made history when it first began operations in Juneau, Alaska in the summer of 2001. It expanded to Seattle in summer 2005 and is planned to roll out in other ports that have made commitments to the technology, including Los Angeles and San Francisco. Currently nine of the line's ships are outfitted with the capability to "plug in" to a shoreside power source.

"We're very pleased to have worked with Holland America and our Canadian partners to make shore power a reality in Vancouver," said Charlie Ball, president of Princess Tours. "We know that local air quality issues are important to the community and we applaud all who have been involved in this important environmental initiative."

Four Princess ships will use shore power in Vancouver during the 2009 Alaska season. The vessels -- Coral Princess, Diamond Princess, Island Princess and Sapphire Princess -- will call in Vancouver 36 times between May 16 and September 7, 2009 as they sail on seven-day Gulf of Alaska cruises. Approximately 35 metric tons of turbine engine fuel will be eliminated per ship call by connecting to shore power, for an estimated reduction of 1,260 metric tons of fuel over the summer season.

"By shutting off our ships' engines when in Vancouver, we're reducing our usage of fuel and therefore also the emissions that are produced as a result," said Ball. "This is an exciting program for Vancouver and Princess is proud to play a part."

To create this unique power system, Princess outfitted nine of its ships with custom-built, state-of-the-art connection cabinets that connect the ship's electrical network to the local electrical system ashore. Since 2001, Princess has invested nearly $7 million in equipment alone to enable its vessels to connect to shore power. The ships currently equipped with this technology include:
# Coral Princess
# Dawn Princess
# Diamond Princess
# Golden Princess
# Island Princess
# Sapphire Princess
# Sea Princess
# Star Princess
# Sun Princess

Also known as "cold ironing," shore power uses electrical power transmitted from a landside transformer to the vessel via four 3½-inch diameter flexible electrical cables. The actual cable connection on a vessel is a traditional, though quite large, male/female plug and socket. The length of time needed to connect a ship to shore power and shut down the vessel's diesel generator is approximately 40 minutes. Once connected, the ship's engines are powered down and, simultaneously, the necessary amount of power, provided by BC Hydro, will be used to run the ship's services while in port.

"We're looking forward to sharing the expertise we've gained in developing shore power in other ports to contribute to the success of the program in Vancouver," said Ball. "When we first launched shore power nearly eight years ago, there were challenges because it was the first of its kind and there was no existing blueprint. But now, our successful track record has helped guide this project and we're thrilled to see it get underway for the upcoming cruise season.

Crystal Cruises Fuel Surcharge Removed for 2009 Cruises
Posted by: CruiseGuy on Saturday, December 13, 2008 - 03:05 AM
cruise-news
As a result of the continuing drop in oil prices, effective immediately, Crystal Cruises is eliminating its fuel surcharge for 2009 cruises.

New bookings will not be charged a fuel surcharge. For bookings under deposit, Crystal will adjust each booking within the next two weeks, eliminating the fuel surcharge. Guests who have paid in full will receive a shipboard credit in the amount of the assessed fuel surcharge. This revised policy applies to all cruises departing after January 1, 2009.

Crystal Cruises had recently announced it would review oil prices quarterly and would credit fuel surcharges during 2009 if light sweet crude oil prices dipped below $65 per barrel.

"The decreased price of crude oil is significant enough to warrant the elimination of the fuel surcharge at the present time," said Gregg Michel, president of Crystal Cruises. "We will continue to monitor fuel costs. Fortunately, the price trend is currently positive for us and for the consumer."

Queen Victoria Cruise Ship Completes First Year In service
Posted by: CruiseGuy on Thursday, December 11, 2008 - 07:28 PM
cruise-news
Today marks the completion of Queen Victoria's first year in service since Cunard's latest Queen embarked on her Maiden Voyage in December last year - a day after being named by HRH The Duchess of Cornwall with HRH The Prince of Wales in attendance. Since then Queen Victoria has sailed 111,828 miles, made 222 port calls and carried 54,827 guests, many of whom enjoyed the experience so much that they have travelled several times with the ship already. She will spend her first birthday in her home port of Southampton before heading to the Caribbean for Christmas.

Queen Victoria has also become one of the most celebrated ships to be introduced in recent years and has quickly established herself in the Cunard fleet continuing in style the line's traditions established nearly 170 years ago.

In 2008 Queen Victoria completed her maiden World Cruise as well as several voyages to the Mediterranean, Northern Europe and the Caribbean. In 2009 Queen Victoria will sail her second World Cruise and then be based in her home port of Southampton with voyages to the Mediterranean, the Baltic and an inaugural 24-night voyage to Canada and New England.

hile she is the second largest Cunarder ever built (after the line's flagship Queen Mary 2), Queen Victoria is not about size superlatives - she is about style. When the designers of Queen Victoria began to consider the ship's interior public spaces, they drew on the well-recorded and rich history of previous Cunard ocean liners to set the tone. From the ship's double and triple-height spaces - a design feature of grand liners of the past - to rooms imbued with an elegant yet understated British charm, the overall effect is both contemporary and classically historic with some exciting innovations. These include the first traditional West End-style private viewing boxes at sea in the Royal Court Theatre. In fact, when the Royal couple were on board prior to the naming ceremony, they unveiled a plaque in one of the boxes giving Queen Victoria the only "Royal Box" at sea. Other "firsts" include the first Cunardia exhibit display at sea, housing Cunard artifacts and memorabilia and the first two-storey library at sea featuring an elegant spiral staircase. The ship also features the line's celebrated Grills accommodation and dining, further enhanced on Queen Victoria with exclusive deck terraces and an al fresco dining option.

Princess Cruises' Chef's Table Honored by Seatrade
Posted by: CruiseGuy on Wednesday, December 10, 2008 - 11:27 PM
cruise-news
Princess Cruises' unique dining event, the Chef's Table, has been honored as the winner of the Food & Beverage/Hotel Operations Award in the Second Annual Seatrade Insider Cruise Awards. The award was presented today during the Seatrade Med 2008 conference in Venice, Italy.

Recognizing "any individual or company that has created a forward thinking concept or practice or innovation in the F&B/hotel area," the award was determined by a judging panel of industry executives, members of Seatrade Insider's global editorial team, cruise consultants, analysts and association experts from around the world.

"This is a wonderful honor for our Chef's Table program," said Peter Tobler, Princess vice president of food and beverage operations. "We designed this event as an extraordinary dining experience for our passengers, and they've raved about it. But it's exceptionally gratifying that the experts at Seatrade have recognized the innovative nature of the Chef's Table by determining it worthy of being the sole winner of this award."

An industry first, the Chef's Table experience offers a select group of gourmets the rare opportunity to be welcomed into the inner sanctum of the ship's galley to enjoy a full evening of memorable sights, tastes and conversation hosted by the executive chef. Designed as a unique treat for "foodies," the popular event debuted in 2007 aboard Emerald Princess as an unusual culinary experience that goes well beyond the usual galley tours held during the quiet off-hours.

Chef's Table diners not only go behind the scenes to get an insider's view of the dynamic action during the height of dinner preparation, they also enjoy champagne and hors d'oeuvres, followed by a lavish, multi-course tasting dinner paired with selected wines at a special table in the dining room. Specially created at the chef's choice, the menu is not offered anywhere else on the ship. Diners enjoy interaction with the chef throughout the dinner as it is served at their private table. This special experience is now available across most of the Princess fleet, and is limited to 10 diners for $75 per person, including wines.

Founded in 1970, Seatrade is a well-established brand in the international maritime community. Celebrity Solstice takes "Team Earth" Venue to Sea
Posted by: CruiseGuy on Tuesday, December 09, 2008 - 11:58 PM
cruise-news
Celebrity Cruises' new Celebrity Solstice is a vivid illustration of the brand’s commitment to delivering extraordinary service with style, in venues boasting some of the best architecture and design at sea. Among them is one unique not only in its design, but perhaps more so in what it creatively communicates to Celebrity guests.

In partnership with leading conservation organization Conservation International, Celebrity Solstice features the Team Earth venue, an interactive exhibit designed to capture the interest and imagination of Celebrity guests through brilliant nature photography, museum-quality exhibits, and digital touch-screen displays.

"This venue on Celebrity Solstice is the first in the travel and hospitality industry to authentically illustrate how Conservation International and partners such as Celebrity are uniting in a global program of the same name – Team Earth," said Celebrity's President & CEO Dan Hanrahan. "It's a vivid example of our shared belief in doing all we can to preserve the earth's fresh water, clean air, natural resources, and rich beauty."

Onboard Celebrity Solstice, the Team Earth venue is a dynamic and engaging location, presenting news, inspiring films, audio clips, and compelling stories about the wonders of the planet. Guests also can see how Celebrity achieved the numerous energy-efficiencies that it did on Celebrity Solstice, and how similar efforts across the fleet are significantly minimizing every Celebrity ship's impact on the environment. Among those initiatives:
• Celebrity Solstice is the industry's first ship to use solar energy, with 216 solar panels – enough to power all of the ship's guest elevators, or more than 7,000 LED lights.
• The hull was designed explicitly with energy efficiency in mind, with every angle closely tested and examined to achieve optimal cruising speed, guest comfort, and fuel consumption.
• On Celebrity Solstice, and across the fleet, a special silicon coating has been applied to the entire underwater area to reduce frictional resistance and trim fuel consumption. The coating also inhibits marine growth, such as barnacles and algae on the hull, and prevents a breakdown of paint chips into the ocean.
• Celebrity began transitioning from higher wattage halogen and incandescent bulbs to longer-lasting fluorescent and LED lights more than a year ago, as they generate less than 50 percent of the heat of the bulbs previously used, resulting in reduced energy consumption and more efficient air conditioning.
• The high-glazed glass of Celebrity Solstice's windows reduces heat transfer into staterooms and public areas, in turn reducing energy required for air conditioning. The glazing still allows for natural light to enter the ship, but filters out 99.9 percent of UV rays. Meanwhile, on the balance of the fleet, state-of-the-art window film produced by 3M has been installed to achieve the same benefits.
• Advanced wastewater purification (AWP) systems have been installed on every Celebrity ship, and Celebrity Solstice has it from its inception. These systems are capable of treating all wastewater streams onboard – including grey and black water – and restoring it to close to drinking-water quality before discharging.
• An innovative application across the Celebrity fleet is the use of river rocks instead of ice beds in buffet areas, reducing both water and energy consumption due to a lesser need for ice.
• Every ship in the Celebrity fleet also houses low-energy reverse osmosis plants (water makers) to produce fresh drinking water. The line also is installing reduced-flow dishwashers and low-consumption laundry equipment.
"We are thrilled that Celebrity included such an interactive, educational space on their innovative new ship," said Conservation International Chairman and CEO Peter Seligmann. "The Team Earth venue offers a way for kids and adults to learn more about the world's oceans and marine life, as well as the environment as a whole, in a very exciting and engaging way."

Guests visiting the Team Earth venue will not only learn about the energy-efficient attributes of Celebrity Solstice and the entire Celebrity fleet, but about notable conservation efforts around the world. They also will have the opportunity to join the Team Earth online community to receive pertinent news and support global conservation efforts well beyond the time they return home from their cruise, if they choose.

Conservation International (CI) applies innovations in science, economics, policy and community participation to protect the Earth’s richest regions of plant and animal diversity and demonstrate that human societies can live harmoniously with nature. Founded in 1987, CI works in more than 40 countries on four continents to help people find economic alternatives without harming their natural environments. Holland America Adds Collectors’ Voyages and Voyage of the Glaciers to 2009 Alaska Cruises
Posted by: CruiseGuy on Tuesday, December 09, 2008 - 11:56 PM
cruise-news
For Alaska travelers who enjoy the time aboard ship as much as the destination, Holland America Line offers the 14-day Collectors’ Voyages and a new 17-day Voyage of the Glaciers CruiseTour. The extended tours tie together two seven-day Gulf of Alaska cruises on different ships with time to venture inland to Anchorage—a mix of frontier town and modern city—and experience the cultures and lifestyles of Alaskans.

“For many of our travelers, the thrill of an Alaskan vacation is best enjoyed from the decks of our premium ships,” said Richard D. Meadows, CTC, executive vice president, marketing, sales and guest programs. “We created the Collectors’ Voyages and the new Voyage of the Glaciers CruiseTour to be an extended sightseeing tour where guests can experience the beauty of an Alaskan voyage within the lap of Holland America Line luxury.”

Special Shoulder-Season Collectors’ Voyages start at just $999; guests can combine a three- or four-day cruise of the West Coast with a 7-Day Inside Passage Cruise to Alaska:

• May 4 San Diego to Vancouver (11-Day Ryndam)
May 6 Los Angeles to Vancouver (10-Day Zuiderdam)

• Sept. 19 Vancouver to Los Angeles (10-Day Zuiderdam)
Sept. 20 Vancouver to San Diego (11-Day Statendam & Veendam)

Holland America Line mid-size ships offer the most spacious accommodations. Guests always find plenty of room at the rail to take in the views from the wraparound teak deck or the open bow. Adding to the shipboard experience, narration from U.S. Forest Service Rangers in Glacier Bay National Park and at Wrangell-St. Elias National Park’s Hubbard Glacier enliven guests’ knowledge and appreciation of these scenic places. Native interpretation from Huna Totem tribe members (Glacier Bay) and Tlingit tribe members (Hubbard Glacier) also bring color to the legend and lore of the Great Land.

The 17-day Voyage of the Glaciers CruiseTour sails through such renowned sights as the twin Sawyer Glaciers, the 15 glaciers of College Fjord, the immense Hubbard Glacier in Yakutat Bay, or Glacier Bay National Park. In fact, Holland America Line has the most Glacier Bay permit entries of any cruise line. On many people’s “must see” list, Glacier Bay is a 65-mile long fjord with spectacular tidewater glaciers.

14-Day Back-to-Back Glacier Discovery Cruises from $999
Combine two 7-day cruises sailing roundtrip Vancouver, B.C. and double the glacier experience, viewing Glacier Bay National Park or Hubbard Glacier.

17-Day Voyage of the Glaciers CruiseTour from $1,299
Sail northward to Seward via Hubbard Glacier, then embark on a second 7-day cruise in the opposite direction visiting Glacier Bay National Park. See more of Alaska and experience the award-winning service and elegant amenities of two world-class ships. In between, spend two nights in Anchorage, exploring museums, galleries and surrounding landscapes for a 17-Day Voyage of the Glaciers CruiseTour.

10- and 11-Day Pacific Coastal/Alaska Collections from $999
Combine a 3- or 4-day cruise along the West Coast with a 7-day Inside Passage cruise to Alaska. Sail from San Diego to Vancouver (and reverse) or Vancouver to Los Angeles (and reverse) and enjoy the scenery along the coastlines of California, Oregon, Washington, Canada and Alaska.

“Seeing a glacier calve and hearing the thunderous cracking of ice is a once in a lifetime thrill for every traveler,” said Meadows. “Our Voyage of the Glaciers CruiseTour offers numerous opportunities to encounter the spectacular Alaskan glacier experience and spend time in Alaska’s largest city, Anchorage.”

George Geary to sail on Holland America ms Volendam on April 4th, 2009
Posted by: CruiseGuy on Tuesday, December 09, 2008 - 11:55 PM
cruise-news
George Geary, culinary author, instructor and chef, from Los Angeles, Calif., is scheduled to sail as part of the guest-enrichment program on the April 4, 2009, Far East voyage aboard Holland America Line's ms Volendam.

During his cruise, the epicurean expert will perform cooking sessions for guests in the ship's state-of-the-art show kitchen, conduct seminars and tastings, and participate in question and answer sessions.

Geary has been teaching culinary classes for more than 24 years, covering over 110 schools in 41 states and Canada. He also conducts culinary tours to major cities in America and Europe. He has made numerous guest appearances at festivals and on television and is a frequent guest on the radio.

Geary was the pastry chef and production manager for the Walt Disney company for seven years where he supplied the pastry items to Disneyland's restaurants. "The Cheesecake Bible," Geary's newest cookbook, recently was published and his other available books include "125 Best Cheesecake Recipes," "125 Best Biscuit Mix Recipes" and "The Complete Baking Cookbook -- Over 350 Recipes from Cakes to Cookies to Pies and Muffins." He also has been published in several magazines and newspapers, including "Pastry Art and Design" and "Cooking Pleasures" magazines.

The April 4 voyage aboard Volendam explores the ancient wonders of the Far East, with calls at Singapore; Kemaman, Malaysia; Bangkok, Thailand; Phu My, Vietnam; Kotakinabalu, Malaysia; Puerto Princesa and Manila, Philippines, and Hong Kong, China.

Holland America Line launched its innovative culinary guest-enrichment program in 2005. Each of the line's 14 ships features a Culinary Arts Center. A first-class "show kitchen at sea," the Culinary Arts Centers presented by Food and Wine magazine resemble the elaborate show kitchens used by celebrity chefs on television cooking programs and offer culinary demonstrations, tastings and hands-on cooking classes aboard every Holland America sailing.

Each facility features a theater-style venue, with two large plasma video screens and a large cooking display counter where guests can learn from the masters. In partnership with Food and Wine magazine, Holland America Line will schedule approximately 60 celebrated chefs and wine experts to sail in 2009. On cruises that do not have a celebrity chef on board, classes and demonstrations in the show kitchen are scheduled with Holland America's own expert chefs.

Holland America Line also offers a youth Culinary Arts Center activity program to teach kids and teens how to cook. The program incorporates dishes from breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks in complimentary 45-minute-long classes. Kids under eight years old learn to make theme cookies, fruit roll-ups, ice cream sandwiches, salad people art and scones. Kids eight and over make soft pretzels, granola bars, pita chips and hummus, and saltwater taffy. Teens also can attend adult culinary demonstrations.

Holland America Line ships are the perfect setting to showcase award-winning guest experts. In addition to the enrichment experience provided by the culinary stars on board, passengers can dine in a variety of venues, including everything from a quick bite poolside to a formal five-course affair. Every ship features an elegant main dining room, a sophisticated Pinnacle Grill where guests can sample Sterling Silver beef and fresh seafood, the casual indoor-outdoor Lido Restaurant, and the Terrace Grill on deck for lunchtime fare.

Crystal Cruises Global Explorer Lets Guests Fine-Tune Online Tour Searches
Posted by: CruiseGuy on Tuesday, December 09, 2008 - 11:54 PM
cruise-news
Crystal Cruises is introducing a dynamic new online feature to help travelers select the Crystal Adventure that suits them best. Via a user-friendly search window and dozens of icons to assist in customizing searches, the Crystal Global Explorer classifies each Crystal Adventures shore excursion by Activity Type (from archaeology to zip-lining), Activity Level (from soft to extreme adventure) and Age Appropriateness (beginning at age 3 & above).

The Crystal Global Explorer will be available for booking Crystal Adventures on 2009 itineraries under the Shore Excursions Pre-Reservation section of crystalcruises.com.

"The Global Explorer provides guests with the freedom to easily locate the Crystal Adventure that best meets their specific needs and desires," said John Stoll, director, land programs. "The excursions are categorized in a way that allows guests to efficiently 'explore' by voyage, destination or activity in any port. It's an invaluable tool for families with children, multiple generations, or travelers seeking active and more daring excursions."

How it works:

* Guests click on the Crystal Adventures logo on the Crystal website, which guides them to the Shore Excursions Pre-Reservations section.

* They then choose a specific category to narrow their search results for the excursions of their choice. Excursions with that category's icon are listed by port.

* When the guest clicks the mouse over "Walking Level," "Activity Type," "Activity Level" or "Age Appropriateness" excursion categories, the description appears in a pop-up window.

The line's Crystal Adventures - of which there are more than 1,500 - feature more than three dozen categories, including hot-air ballooning, historical sites/UNESCO, river rafting, horseback riding, wine and spirits tastings, golf, 4x4 off-road, art and architecture, and more.

In 2009, the Crystal Global Explorer will be available with Crystal Symphony and Crystal Serenity excursions in the Mediterranean, Baltic, Middle East, Panama Canal, New England/Canada, North Cape and South America.

Guests looking to further customize their experiences ashore can take advantage of Crystal Private Adventures, allowing them to create specially tailored excursions that suit their needs.

Princess Cruises Passengers Pick Favorite Caribbean Excursions
Posted by: CruiseGuy on Monday, December 08, 2008 - 08:26 PM
cruise-news
Princess Cruises is once again recognizing the important role local tour operators play in the overall cruise experience by announcing the winners of its 2007-08 C.R.U.I.S.E. service awards for the Caribbean. The 10th annual awards honor passenger choices for best tours of the season plus favorite tour guides in many of the ports where Princess ships call.

A number of tours have topped the list for several years, and one -- the Americas Cup 12-Metre Yacht Regatta tour in St. Maarten -- has now been voted 'Shore Excursion of the Season' for the 10th year in a row.

C.R.U.I.S.E. service award winners are determined primarily through positive feedback on passenger surveys, and the awards are presented to both tour companies and individual guides from Princess' extensive line-up of more than 800 shore excursion options throughout the Caribbean.

"Because we place such a great emphasis on high service levels, we feel it's important to recognize those local tour operators who do a great job of continuing Princess' commitment to service when our passengers are in port," said Steve Nielsen, Princess' vice president of Caribbean and Atlantic shore operations. "These local guides and companies are ambassadors for both Princess and their respective destinations."

Begun in 1999 as part of Princess' C.R.U.I.S.E. (Courtesy, Respect, Unfailing In Service Excellence) customer service program, these tour operator awards cap off a season-long effort to recognize the role that local tour partners play in passengers' cruise experiences. Tour Guide of the Season award winners receive $100, a letter of commendation, a ship tour and lunch onboard with their family, a specially designed C.R.U.I.S.E. pin. Operators of the Shore Excursion of the Season receive a plaque and a letter of commendation, a tour of the ship, and lunch onboard for company officials.
